"Besides a complete fee waiver for these students, those with a family income of less than Rs 5 lakh will be given a 66% concession in the fees," Smriti Irani was quoted saying to the national daily Times of India.
If the proposal comes into effect, it will also benefit nearly 50 per cent of the 60,471 SC/ST, Dalit and Disabled candidates enrolled at IITs. The move comes after IIT council, a body comprising IIT directors and senior officials, headed by IIT Roorkee Chairman Ashok Misra had approved annual fee hike for the premier engineering institutions from existing Rs 90,000 to Rs 3 Lakh for Indian students. This proposal on fee hike is also pending for clearance from MHRD.
At present, the IITs give a 27 per cent reservation to OBC candidates, 15 per cent to SC candidates and 7.5 per cent reservation to ST candidates. The expected 66 per cent fee waiver will benefit a huge number of students belonging to middle-class and lower middle-class.
Admission to IIT is held through two-stage written test and counselling process. All 18 IITs and ISM Dhanbad offer admissions at 10,006 UG engineering seats.
