Gear up for JEE Advanced
If you have performed well in JEE Main and think that you will be one of the top 2 lakh candidates, then start preparing for JEE Advanced right away. Held in May, the exam is conducted for admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and ISM Dhanbad. There are nearly 10,000 undergraduate seats in the existing 18 IITs and ISM Dhanbad.

Other prestigious institutes like Indian Institutes of Science Education & Research (IISERs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram also consider your performance in JEE Advanced for admission. Online application for JEE Advanced are available from last week of April to first week of May.

Appear for other top entrance examinations
Appearing for other entrance exams is recommended if you couldn’t give your best shot in JEE Main. Qualifying in other national/state-level engineering entrance exams can also get you a seat in a prestigious engineering college. Some state-level exams also offer seats in good engineering colleges located in the respective states. These exams also offer you an opportunity of staying in your state of domicile while studying.

Now it’s time to get ready for JoSAA Counselling
If you think that you will not be able to secure the minimum cut-off required to appear for JEE Advanced, then don’t be disappointed. There are possibilities that you can get admission in a good engineering college, based on your JEE Main performance.

Do get ready for a centralized counselling for over 23,000 seats across top engineering colleges that include 31 NITs, 18 IIITs and 18 GFTIs. Once your class 12th result is out, CBSE publishes AIRs in the month of June on the basis of which you can take part in the counselling procedure, which will be conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).

Apply to state colleges accepting JEE Main ranks
There are a few states in India that do not conduct any entrance exam and offer admissions on the basis of candidates’ JEE Main performance. The States of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Odisha are all in this league. So, candidates not getting admissions in prestigious NITs still have the options to pursue the course in other premium institutes. The state authorities release the application forms for admissions to B.Tech courses in these states.

Apart from these state engineering colleges, there are various private universities that admit students based on JEE Main scores.

Analyze your performance well; take another chance for JEE Main next year
If you have set your heart on studying in IITs only, then you can take another chance next year. You can think of spending another year on rigorous preparation for this coveted engineering exam if this was your first chance. A full year of preparation for JEE Main next year combined with your exam experience this year will give you an edge over your competitors. According to CBSE, a candidate can appear for JEE Main up to a maximum of three times. So, keep your mind focused on qualifying the exam from the very beginning this time.

Focus on practice
If you have already taken coaching classes, a heavy focus on practice, consistency on study hours and punctuality will help you a lot. As you have already gone through the regular classes, you can opt for group study and occasionally seek help from an expert or your mentor for clearing doubts. This will help to strengthen your weak areas.

Importance of SWOT analysis
In case you took the exam on the basis of self-study only, you should go for SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. This will help you understand areas where you need to improve, based on your current level of preparation. This way, you can build an effective and personalized strategy in order to qualify JEE Main next year and qualify to appear in JEE Advanced. Joining a regular coaching course or seeking expert guidance can be of great help for you.
  • Devote your time to each subject as per your strong and weak areas
  • Focus more on important topics and chapters
  • Practicing previous years’ papers is a must
  • Along with coaching classes, devote your time to self-studies
  • Don’t waste your precious time on social media
  • Be composed and confident. Feel motivated
